Why Choose Bare-Root?
Stronger Roots. Robust Plants. A Thriving Future
What Are Bare-Root Plants?
Bare-root plants are exactly what they sound like - trees, shrubs, and vines sold without soil around their roots. Unlike potted plants, they are harvested when dormant, with their roots carefully preserved and ready for planting.
At Forest-Farmhouse & Nursery, we specialize in bare-root plants because we have found them to be the most affordable, resilient, and sustainable way to establish a thriving landscape.
4 Reasons to Choose Bare-Root Plants
Stronger Root Systems
Without the constraints of a pot, bare-root plants develop unrestricted, healthier roots. When planted in your soil, they adapt themselves faster and develop more quickly than container-grown plants.
More Affordable
Potted plants take up more space, require extra materials, more water, and are heavier to ship - all of which drive up costs. Bare-root plants give you more for your money, so you can plant a food forest without breaking the bank.
Easier to Transport & Plant
Since they are lightweight and compact, bare-root plants ship more efficiently and are easier to handle when planting. That means less stress for both you and the plants!
Good for the Environment
No plastic pots. No synthetic fertilizers. Less chance of transferring invassive pests that reside in the soil. You get strong, naturally grown plants grown in a manner that strives to improve the soil and the planet.
How to Plant & Care for Bare-Root Plants
1. Soak the Roots in water for a few hours before planting.
2. Dig a wide hole to give the roots plenty of room to spread.
3. Position the plant at the right depth - this will vary by plant.
4. Backfill with soil, pressing gently to remove air pockets.
5. Water deeply to encourage root establishment.
6. Mulch & protect from pests, and extreme temperatures as needed.
